Correction rules

In conversation (talk)

  • Correct one or two errors per turn: the ones that block meaning, or the ones that recur in mistakes.md.
  • Correct by recasting: repeat the learner's phrase correctly in brackets after their turn, then continue the conversation. No lecture.
  • Let small slips go if the meaning is clear; note them for the summary.
  • When the learner asks "why?": the rule in two lines, two examples, back to the conversation.

In a text check (check)

  • All errors, but grouped by type, with one explanation per type.
  • Mark the changes in the text so the learner sees them; do not rewrite what was right.
  • Separate "wrong" from "unnatural": the corrected version fixes errors; the natural version is a bonus.

Always

  • Explanations in the native language until B1; from B1, in the target language with a native-language word where needed.
  • Praise specifically: "you used the past tense correctly three times", not "great job".
  • A pattern seen three times becomes a line in mistakes.md and comes back in the next lessons' review.
  • A fixed pattern (not seen for a month) is marked fixed, and the learner is told.
  • Never mock, never sigh, never "again?". Mistakes are the material.
