# Save prompts and skills

Crafted a great prompt or instruction in chat? Tell your assistant to save it to a Pacpio project to keep it accessible and version-controlled.

## Save directly from chat

When a prompt or skill works well, ask your assistant to save it. You can specify both the project and the file path:

> Save this prompt to my Pacpio project Sales bot as `prompts/follow-up.md`.

Your assistant creates the file and confirms what was saved. No copying, pasting, or manual file downloads needed.

Starting from scratch? Create a project and save the file in a single message:

> Create a Pacpio project called Sales bot and save this prompt there.

## Edit existing files

You don't need to rewrite the entire document to make an update. Your assistant will modify only the specified part:

> In my Pacpio project Sales bot, make the greeting in `prompts/follow-up.md` shorter.

Every edit generates a new version with a short note about what changed, making it easy to track changes or roll them back. Learn more in [Versions & History](https://pacpio.com/docs/guides/versions-and-undo).

## Reuse across chats and platforms

Start a new chat in any connected assistant and bring your files right into the conversation:

> Apply the follow-up prompt from my Pacpio project Sales bot.

To keep the conversation lean, your assistant only loads the files it needs. For long documents, it reads a summary of sections first and retrieves only the relevant portion.

## Supported formats & limits

- **File types:** Any plain text or Markdown format (prompts, instructions, skills, notes, documentation).
- **Tables:** CSV files with the column names in the first row. Your assistant can add rows and answer questions about them. See [Tables](https://pacpio.com/docs/guides/tables).
- **File size:** Up to 1 MB per file.
- **Non-text files (PDFs, images):** Attach them to your chat and ask the assistant to save the key text to Pacpio.
- **Spreadsheets:** Attach them to your chat and ask the assistant to save them as tables.

**Security warning:** Pacpio automatically blocks files containing API keys, passwords, or secrets. Never store sensitive credentials in your projects.
